I've been considering getting a satnav for a while and probably like most people have been confused by the array of devices available and confused further by the various reviews given - some good, some bad. With a limited budget in mind and having read largely very good reviews I took the plunge with the Nuvi 250. Any doubts I had have completely gone - it's brilliant! It really is that easy and that good. Ok, so it doesn't have loads of features (you'll get those on more expensive machines) but if you simply want a satnav to tell you how to get to a destination that you've not been to before then it's perfect. I'm really impressed. The instruction manual is surprisingly basic, but it still tells you what you need to know to get started (most other features can be worked by trial and error). Satellites are acquired quickly (when you're outside), the route calculated quickly and then it's ready to go with clear instructions both on screen and spoken. If you go wrong either by mistake or because you know better than it (which you will from time to time) it very quickly recalculates the route.
We have used it several times over the last couple of months and it has saved a lot of time and stress over getting lost - it is a bit weird putting your faith in a small machine, but it has taken us on some amazing routes that you would never have thought of and arrived at the door exactly when it said you would. Totally recommended! Get the case too to protect it when it's not in use - it's only a few pounds more.

Bought this unit last week, because it's cheaper than Tomtom (for similar model) and longer battery life. Somewhat dissapointed because the map seems to be out of date (some roads are not displayed, I took wrong turn several times, especially dead-end roads!). It has a pedestrian mode, which implies that you can take it for a walk and it'll show you direction. Well, not really! Accuracy is pretty low in this mode, I had to walk back and forth looking for a museum which according to it, is right in front of me (it turns out to be one block away!). Unfortunately I have not had experience with other GPS so can't really compare. Good that it shows me direction for driving, and for the price with european map, I guess I just have to be happy with it.

This the first Sat Nav I've owned. It was very simple to set up and install in the car, although I made the mistake of putting the mounting disk in a spot obscured by the steering wheel. Both the visual and voice commands are just right. Also impressed by the speed camera warnings and the functions to find nearby cafes and stations. With the European mapping this is very good value. Wish I'd bought one years ago!

I do a lot of driving to and from gigs in the London and South East area and as convoy driving with the band is a stressful, frustrating experience, I decided to splash out on a Sat Nav.
Initially I didn't have a clue which one to get. Every Sat Nav seems to have a load of people who think it's amazing, but then loads of other people who think it's terrible; quite difficult to reach a decision! I eventually decided on the Garmin 520 due to an Amazon offer.
So far I've been really impressed. It's always got me to where I need to be, I've not been diverted miles out of my way, I've not once had a problem with getting signal, It recalculates quickly if you go a different direction and it is really easy to use. I've not used any of the fancy functions (i.e. photo viewer) but then all I want from a Sat Nav is directions.
The negative points I've experienced:
-The screen can be affected by glare
-destination arrival times cannot be relied upon
- It is sometimes difficult to identify which turn to take (especially in the maze of London roads)
-Her voice is quite annoying
- I find the constant beeping when driving over the limit in mobile/fixed camera areas tedious. (Then again, it's great to be told where these spots are and for the limit to be displayed on the screen too, and if you're not one for speeding, this last point won't apply at all!)
However, these should not distract from the fact that the Garmin 520 gets you where you want to be easily, providing you're sensible and keep in mind that it's for guidance only. As such, I reckon it is well worth 5 stars.

Like a lot of reviewers, this is my first sat nav. My intentions are to use it when travelling alone. For this scenario the Garmin is pretty good, although when I first switched it on to find my own home post code, it did not recognise that, even though my 'new house' is now 8 years old, this together with a few more oddities I could list.
Call me old fashioned, but a competent map reader in the passenger seat, with an upto date map, works just as well in my opinion. As most long journeys within the UK involve Motorway driving, is a Sat Nav really required !
Although I'll still have it switched on, as it is handy for finding Petrol stations, when low on fuel, as happened to me recently!
