2008 Simcha details announced

This years ‘Simcha on the Square’ festival takes place on in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 14 September and organisers have announced that Grammy Award winning band The Klezmatics are to headline the day’s celebrations.

Attendees are promised a great day out with the chance to enjoy Joglaresa’s exotic medieval Judeo-Spanish sounds; Gregori Schechter’s toe-tapping Klezmer, and Max Pashm’s dance beats. There will be cantors, youth choirs and dance troupes as well as Lauren Rose’s joyous pop and the new wedding band, STYLE, featuring the popular cantor and tenor, Steven Leas.

Last year’s event was attended by around 25,000 people, making it the the biggest one-day festival of Jewish culture in the UK.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “This year’s ‘Simcha on the Square’ promises to delight the crowds more than ever before, and features a particularly exciting line-up that shows just how popular Jewish culture has been around the world.”

“Apart from being a fabulously fun day out for all the family, Londoners will be able to experience the genuine tastes, sights and sounds of both modern and ancient Jewish heritage. It’s also an opportunity for London as a city to recognise the contribution that the Jewish community, in all its diversity, makes to the capital.’

Geraldine Auerbach MBE, Director of the Jewish Music Institute and Convenor of ‘Simcha on the Square’, said: “It’s wonderful that, this iconic London landmark becomes ‘Jewish’ for the day and that, in partnership with the Mayor of London, we have the opportunity to celebrate and share Jewish music, song, dance and culture with all Londoners.”

“We are sure there will be something for everyone, and this year’s acts are already causing much excitement. We are all looking forward to a very enjoyable and exciting ‘Simcha’ on the Square.”

Simcha on the Square is organised by the Jewish Music Institute on behalf of Jewish Culture UK. and is supported by the Greater London Authority, the European Day of Jewish Culture and Heritage, the London Jewish Forum and many Jewish Culture groups
