Amazon.co.uk Review Three seasons into Supernatural and brothers Sam and Dean Winchester are still attracting trouble. For the pair have a talent for battling the kind of spirits and creatures that are best kept locked away in nightmares--and it's fair to say their journey has taken its toll on them. As we join them in the third season of Supernatural, their travels and adventures take in a mixture of increasingly intriguing threats and foes. Among the highlights is a man who has become trapped within his own mind, the day that Sam continually has to live over and over again (Groundhog Day style) and a sinister threat to Dean that underpins much of the series. Not forgetting a Christmas episode with a bit of a different feel to it than your usual festive special... While the series was shortened a little due to the writers' strike that was ongoing in America while it was being made, the sixteen episodes in this Supernatural boxset nonetheless offer ample entertainment. Cleverly weaving together action, comedy and horror, it builds and improves on the second season, and while it may rush things a little come the finale, it's still a terrific and underrated programme. Here's looking forward to season four. --Jon Foster

What a disappointment September 1, 2008 Emer Henry (Ireland) 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
My entire family are huge supernatural fans and couldn't wait to get our hands on season three (already owning seasons 1 & 2 which we have almost worn out watching over and over). We sat down to watch this with great excitement which I'm afraid didn't last too long. There are very few good episodes in this. The Christmas one - please, why? Such tripe. The only episode that scared me was the prison one and even that didn't scare too much. The final episode we thought would redeem it but I'm afraid the ending is a complete let down. Obviously the writers wrote this in a tremendous hurry to make up for lost time with the strike but in all fairness I think they should just forget this version of season 3 exists and remake it again from the start. And what happened to the cool music that the boys always listen to in the car? The only music in the car this time round was in the last episode and it was Bon Jovi which is totally out of character for Dean. Please, you have insulted the true fans. Put things right. Oh yeah, the one star is for the prison episode and Ruby.
Shockingly bad August 31, 2008 E. V. Berg (London, UK) 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
I watched Supernatural because like many people I've been missing my X-Files/Buffy fix.
This is one of the worst series I've ever watched (and yes, I've watched EVERY SINGLE EPISODE, simply because I thought they can't all be that bad. Yep, they were). Whereas Buffy is witty, clever, complex and non-misogynist this series drowns under the weight of its unimaginative, clunky writing, predictable plot, and wooden acting (though it seems churlish to have a go at the actors as they don't have a lot to work with). And with the introduction of two strong female characters (Bela and Ruby) the misogyny is cranked up a notch. I've lost count how many times the word "b****" was used to reference these girls. Obviously there is no deeper characterisation here (this being Supernatural after all) but contrast this with the treatment for example of Faith/Glory/early Cordelia etc. in Buffy.
The scenes between the brothers in the car/motel/diner were tedious beyond belief. Honestly I couldn't wait for the hellhounds to catch up with Dean and drag him to hell, just so he and Sam would no longer have those pointless "I know you are scared" - "No I'm not" conversations.
The only plus is the way the series is shot. Making good use of the Vancouver locations, the cinematographer/lighting team manage to invest this series with an haunting, atmospheric beauty it doesn't deserve.
I only give 1 star because there is no option to give no stars. If you want to check it out I suggest you rent it but don't buy it. It's a waste of money. If you want to watch quality television give Battelstar Galactica a try. It's excellent and well worth your time. Other than that, re-watch Buffy, Angel, Firefly, anything but this dross.
outstanding series with extras August 29, 2008 Susan Belcher (St Helens, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This box set consists of 5 discs, the full contingent of 16 episodes (damn the writers strike). With lots of extras. There is:
- a gag reel (although some of them are now looking staged for the purpose rather than true errors);
- a short film called from legacy to reality (look at the special effects);
- a featurette on the impala (metallicar history and how they kitted it out to make it special);
- a Ghostfacers confessional (I know that this isn't a popular episode with some but I like it);
- a number of "a closer look" featurettes (one for almost every episode);
Missing, however, are the commentaries and the "filming with Jensen and Jared" featurette, and extra blooper reel which my friend in the US said are on there's.
This is my favourite series (sorry CSI NY you came a close second).
Summary of show: Firstly (and obviously) this season 3 (if you haven't got them I would suggest that you purchase the first 2 seasons so you know what's happened and what's going on).
The deal that Dean made in "all hell breaks loose" is due for payment at the end of this season, and as we travel the road with Sam and Dean we watch them try to come to terms with what's going to happen. One again (as usual with Kripke productions) we see new characters introduced, the return of some favourites.
I have to say I like the idea of the demon Lilith, although Katie Cassidy's demon "Ruby" does tend to get on my nerves (and I can't put my finger on why). I did find that I 'sort of' liked the character of Bella.
Out of the episdes my personal favourites are:
#3 - Bad day at Black Rock - the boys find that dad, John, had a storage unit after it is broken in to (this is the only mention of it in this season). They then go in search of the missing item.
#11 - Mystery Spot - after the initial shock, when I realised what was going on, I started to laugh. Poor Dean.
#13 - Ghostfacers - Ed and Harry are back with a mickey take on Most Haunted et al.
I recommend Supernatural as my secret pleasure.
Supernaturaly brilliant August 27, 2008 Mrs. E. Fawcett 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been a huge fan of Supernatural since my best mate forced me to watch the first series a year ago and I'm happy to admit I'm pretty obsessed! All three series are brilliant, I'm happily in love with Jensen Ackles, yum. This series is great also, not as heartbreakingly sad as series 2 but it has alot of humour, espeically 'bad day at black rock' and sams temper in 'mystery spot'. I recommend this to all fans, and if you haven't sen it yet, order it now!
It just gets better and better.... August 25, 2008 J. Yeend (United Kingdom) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been a fan of this show since Season one. But as much as I liked the first season, I thought the show might run out of steam. Thats because it blatantly ripped off almost every horror cliche you can think of (you could be forgiven for thinking that sort of thing happens towards the end of a show's lifetime as the writers start to dry up on ideas?!). So its pretty impressive to see that this show just gets better and better as the seasons progress. So what do I like about this season? No filler, more action, more gore, and more hot chicks....oh, yeah the storyline is pretty good too. Its a pity there aren't more episodes, but we all know why that is. Go out and buy it. Enjoy.
