1 out of 5 stars Tremendously poor!   July 2, 2008

The whole film was, in my opinion, a complete shambles! The story is fragmented and poorly written and most importantly was completely devoid of any humour. I see that this film has split the audience and I side with the haters on this one. And I hate to do that. I loved the series and thought it was a travesty it was cancelled but if this is the best they can do then maybe it was better gone and leaving us with 4 seasons of top quality comedy.

3 out of 5 stars One for the nerds   July 2, 2008

The first thing to say is that this movie references almost every previous episode of Futurama. I'm not even exaggerating - I didn't count the references but I reckon that there are plot points & repeat character appearances from at least half the episodes in the series.

If you've watched all the episodes over & over - as I have - then you might really appreciate this. Or, like me, you might find it all a little self-indulgent. I guess this is a kind of thank you gift to the diehard fans who have helped bring the series back, but I think that this long episode could have done more to try to appeal to a new audience too. I don't want to see Futurama deteriorating like the Simpsons or Family Guy, which might happen if it gets bogged down in smug self-referrential humour.

The plot has a lot of travelling back in time & characters meeting past or future versions of themselves, which makes it a little confusing to follow. It's also a bit short on big laughs. The best parts are some of the new ideas, like the Nude Beach Planet and the Scammers, so it's a shame so much time is spent in dredging up old storylines & building up a complicated time travel story.

This is one for the Futurama nerds. If you've seen most or all of the series, then this movie is worth having. If you're new to Futurama or a casual viewer, watch the series first, or skip this & watch the Beast with a Billion Backs, which is way funnier & easier to follow.

4 out of 5 stars Please give your review a title.   June 27, 2008

Pretty good , but not as good as i was hoping for. The longer format drags a little in comparison to the series. Also the plot was a little too convoluted, perhaps as a result of the longer format. I reckon the next one will be better.

1 out of 5 stars A Real Let Down   June 19, 2008

A total mess, fractured narrative, focus on weak characters (coupled with a fundamental shift in how one major character acts), dull antagonists, suffers at times like the stewie griffin movie in how it has been tacked together. Tries to be both esoteric and open to new audiences ending up totally confused about it's reason for existence. Self references taken way beyond funny, just comes across as bitterness ("box" corp). Worst of all it's just not very funny and even the pathos (futurama's strongest point in the past) misses the mark by quite a way.
