Amazon.co.uk Review
The 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man, this gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin. His investigation is a source of constant aggravation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young), who turns out to be packing more than a pistol under her skirt. Friends fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. One viewing may suffice for a lot of people, but Carrey's hyper antics made Ace Ventura: Pet Detective one of the bestselling videos of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars the best movie ever!!!   December 26, 2007

I must have watched this movie thirty times in one month during college! A true classic script and especially performance by Jim Carrey, with nonstop manic nonsense and madness. Filled with tons of hilarious one liners and quotables from Carrey. I think it's Carrey's funniest performance, with Liar Liar second, and The Mask third. This was him making it to the big time as a comic actor and he holds nothing back. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious classic!   October 15, 2007

If you ever want to watch a really insane film which will make you laugh, then this is it. I enjoy most Jim Carrey films and although this one is some years old, it never fails to make me chuckle. It has quite a clever plot, i.e. Carrey plays a pet detective, whereby people hire him to find their pets or animals. They may have been stolen, kidnapped or otherwise, but by hook or by crook, Ace Ventura will find and return the creature to its rightful owner.

The film's charm is mainly in Carrey's idiocy. His talent for pulling stupid faces and generally being a moron is amazing. I'm guessing being on a film set with him would have you holding your sides most of the time. But it makes the film, because the character of Ace Ventura is a lovable idiot, and in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective he certainly saves the day by returning the missing mascot of a football team just in time for their Superbowl game.

If you hate Carrey (as many do) then don't watch this film. But if you like him, or you're indifferent, it's a laugh a minute and you have to admire the guy for happily making an idiot of himself on camera for the public's enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Pet Dick   September 23, 2007

Director Tom Shadyac went on to work with Jim Carrey on two more films, but this puerile comedy is the best. Essentially it's a vehicle for Jim Carrey's energetic, gurning brand of childish slapstick - Courtney Cox, Udo Kier et al wisely play it dead straight and allow the obnoxious pet detective to poke fun at them. It makes for often hilarious viewing: the vigour with which Carrey throws himself into his endless caricatures is freakishly fascinating to watch.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the two - sheer entertainment   January 21, 2007

Another 90's classic, and probably the film that made Jim Carrey a star, Ace Ventura is an absolute classic, and seems to be a film many of us watched when we were teens. An ecentric Jim Carrey plays a private-hire 'Pet Detective', who's main concern is capturing a rare dove that, once he has recieved the reward, can pay his landlord! However, he is called up to action when the local football teams mascott - a dolphin, is kidnapped.
Admittedly, Jim Carrey has always recieved mixed reviews based on his style of humour, but that is no reason mark down a film because of the style of an actor. His immature, yet powerful humour is still laugh out loud at times, and people forget just how much of a good serious actor he is too, as displayed in other films.
But, if your looking for a fun and still clever 'pet' detective film (of which you'll find very few!) then this is the DVD you want to buy!

I saw this film recently and it made me fall in love with Jim carey. Long ago I used to think he was a singer because he has the same surname as mariah carey!!! But when I watched this I could not stop laughing at him, especailly when he comes to the mental hospital. I intend to get this film very soon, and when I do I can see myself laughing the whole way through and watching it over and over again.
